Scattered thunderstorms are possible in the DC area for Sunday evening

While previous severe weather watches have been called off, we are keeping an eye out for scattered thunderstorms and high winds as we head into Sunday evening.

While previous severe weather watches have been called off, we are keeping an eye out for scattered thunderstorms and high winds as we head into Sunday evening.

Here’s what we’re looking at tonight:

  • More and more clouds throughout the day.
  • Afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms.
  • Fresh wind, wind blowing 10 to 20 mph.
  • Warmer temperatures, highs in the upper 70s.

On Sunday afternoon, high winds in Frederick, Maryland knocked down trees and power lines, including a utility pole that was snapped in half on Hunting Rd.

For most of the region, clouds will increase throughout Sunday. Thunderstorms are possible as the low pressure center swings its cold front towards the region, reports Storm 4 team meteorologist Clay Anderson.

Ahead of the front, temperatures will reach the upper 70s in the afternoon. Once the cold front sweeps in Sunday evening, winds will shift to westerlies and bring drier air back to the DC area.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms will diminish by midnight with a gradual clearing overnight.

The week ahead will be pleasant until the northward trek of Tropical Storm Ian hits our area, spreading heavy rain and gusty winds to the DC area Friday night through next weekend.
